Novelty Halloween Shoot

medals at Droitwich

We held our first Halloween fun shoot and barbeque this week with half a dozen excellent taget faces, designed by Chris Earp. We started at 7 o'clock on a fine autumn evening with the targets illuminated by floodlights powered by the new generator.

We shot 3 dozen arrows at the targets scoring points for the 3 zones or sweets for the pumpkins. Steve Partridge won the points competition, even though he shoots barebow. Rachel Smith was top lady and Niall Joy was top junior. However, some archers won a lot of sweets instead of points!!!

Afterwards there was food on the barbeque and drinks and cakes from the kitchen, presided over by Dot.

Some photos of the shoot.

Everybody agreed that it had been a huge success and we expect this to become a regular event in the RLSAS calendar.

Records Tumble at Junior National Championships

Michael McCarthy
Isobel Roberts

Three of our juniors took part in the Junior National Championships held at Lilleshall at the weekend. It's a two day event with archers shooting the FITA and Metric rounds on Saturday and the York, Hereford, Bristol rounds on Sunday. The weather on both days was almost perfect being warm and sunny with only a light breeze so there were some very good scores shot and many records broken.

Michael McCarthy, in the boys under-12 recurve category won both the Metric 4 on the Saturday, with a score of 1237, and the Bristol IV on Sunday with a score of 1113. His Metric 4 score sets a new club and county record.

Isobel Roberts, in the girls under-12 recurve category came second in the Metric 5 with a score of 1289, setting a new club and county record, and only losing to Lizzie Warner who set a new national record of 1320. However, on the Sunday she beat Lizzie to win the Bristol V round with a new club, county and national record of 1262. She was also part of the West Midlands team that won the Regional trophy that day.

Caitlin McCarthy set a new club record for the girls Metric 3 round with a score of 1185 and all three juniors are now classed as Junior Master Bowmen. We seniors had better watch out!!

Club Field Shoot at March Hare

Naomi shooting at Ogden, USA

Saturday saw a dozen members of the club travel to the March Hare field course near Pershore, where we had a very enjoyable afternoon shooting a 14 target EFAA course. This is a mostly flat course in woodland and scrub with targets at up to 80 yards for seniors and shorter distances for juniors. We spent a while on their practice butts checking sight marks and familiarising ourselves with the EFAA target faces and then went round the 14 target course. Here there were a range of targets including a number of walk-ups and one fan. Archers shot 4 arrows at each target with a maximum score of 20 per target.

There were some good scores on the day and competition was very tight. Pete Hunnisett got the top gents recurve score just beating Martyn Ellis and Brian Tustin into second and third. Similarly in the junior gents recurve Ben Thompson narrowly beat Niall Joy.

We ended the day with a barbeque and everyone agreed that it had been a thoroughly enjoyable event which we would all like to do again.

Our thanks go to Martyn Ellis for organising the shoot and to March Hare for putting up with us. Steve Partridge and Glenn Owen took photos which can be seen in the gallery.

Leamington & Midland Counties Tournament

The 160th Leamington and Midland Counties Tournament was held at our ground on the weekend of 4th and 5th June. The weather was warm and sunny but there was a strong and gusty tailwind, which was especially tricky on the second day. Nevertheless, there were some reasonable scores and a number of archers claimed Rose awards on each day. The event went without a hitch and was clearly enjoyed by all who took part, with several of the visitors making a point of saying how much they enjoyed it.

Out thanks go to all the people who helped to prepare for the event and to those who worked hard throughout the weekend to ensure that the event ran smoothly, especially Jules and Will who got the results out in record time again. Also to the tournament organiser, Brian Tustin.

This year's mens champion was Bob Lowe from Meriden and the lady champion was Natalie Gee from Sutton Coldfield.

Folkard Takes National Record

Leamington’s GB international archer Naomi Folkard last weekend broke the national record for the ladies’ long metric round, while competing in the World Record status FITA Star at Meriden’s Forest Ground.

The competition which attracted some of the country’s top archers, involved 3 dozen arrows at each of four distances (90, 70, 50 and 30 metres for the men and 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies).  The cold wet weather resulted in 12 archers not starting the event and a further 20 retiring before the end.

Folkard made an excellent start with 326 for 70m and 343 for 60m, giving her 669 for the long metric, to put 3 points on the national record set in 2003 by Alison Williamson.  With 322 for 50m and 350 for 30m Folkard finished with an excellent 1341, well ahead of the rest of the field.

Seniors shoot well at Stratford

A few of our senior archers shot at the annual Stratford Shakespeare shoot on Sunday. Although mostly dry and sunny the famous Stratford wind made shooting very tricky.

Four Club Records fall in League Match

Last night saw the first of the Summer league matches, the Short Metric series for the WMAS league. We had a good turnout with 18 archers putting in scores for a total which improved on last year's by a good margin. Among the excellent scores were four new club records:

Short Metric - Compound - Chris Earp - 664
Short Metric III - Recurve - Caitlin McCarthy - 601
Short Metric IV - Recurve - Michael McCarthy - 634
Short Metric V - Recurve - Isobel Roberts - 656

Well done to all these and if you did not shoot this round, do try to shoot the next match (this Friday) - it's only a Warwick, so nice and easy, even for novices.

Field Shoot planned for 25 June

Martyn Ellis has arranged a field shoot for us on Saturday 25 June at March Hare. This is field archery club based in Throckmorton, Worcestershire, and they have a website with details of how to get there.

We plan to start with a practice session in the morning, followed by a short refreshment break. We will then shoot a 14 target course which will take us to about 3 o'clock when we will have a Bar-B-Q (bring your own food). The cost will only be £6 per archer so please let Martyn know if you are intending to go.

There will be distances to suit all abilities so juniors and novices are equally welcolm to attend. We don't get too many chances to do a field shoot so do have a go. More details will be available soon.

Sandy & Niall win Trophies at WMAS Novices

Leamington hosted the West Midlands Archery Society annual Novices shoot on Sunday. Archers shot the Western round (4 dozen at each of 60 and 50 yards) with shorter distances for juniors. The weather was glorious except for a rather strong cross-wind which caused a few problems for some.

Leamington archers did well with Sandy Rice taking the Ladies Recurve Trophy and Niall Joy winning the Junior Trophy for the highest recurve score for any age group. John Barnes just missed out on a medal by coming 4th in the Gents Recurve. Also shooting were Ben Brown and Tammy Earp.

Naomi wins First Major Shoot of the Outdoor Season

Naomi shooting at Ogden, USA
Folkard at the World Cup 2010, Ogden USA

Leamington GB international recurve archer Naomi Folkard made a spectacular start to the outdoor season last weekend at Meriden’s world record status FITA Star tournament, both winning their class.  This first major event of the season attracted numerous top GB archers, making competition fierce.

All archers shot the 12 dozen FITA rounds (3 dozen arrows at each of 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres for the ladies; and 90, 70, 60 and 50 metres for the men).  Weather conditions were generally good, although there was a slight breeze with rain and hail towards the end.

In the ladies’ recurve event Folkard led throughout to finish with an excellent 1316, ahead of Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley) 1260 and Jeanetta McLean ( Brent Valley) 1246.  As well as first place she took all four distance awards.

Folkard is currently in Antalya, Turkey where she hopes to do well in the first leg of the European Grand Prix.

Also shooting from Leamington was Brian Tustin who put a good score of 1188, sadly missing his MB score by only two points. The Men's Recurve was won by international archer Simon Terry with an excellent 1354, way ahead of the competition.

National Record for Folkard

Field shoot
Folkard preparing to shoot in the
Commonwealth Games last year

Leamington’s Naomi Folkard used the West Midlands Indoor Archery Championships last week to warm up for the European Indoor Championships in Spain later this month.  She won the ladies’ recurve event and put two points on to her own national record.

The tournament held at Evesham, and combined with the Worcestershire County and Open Championships, was well attended and attracted some top international archers to shoot the world record status FITA 18 round (5 dozen arrows at a 3 spot 40 cm face over 18 metres).

Folkard shot two rounds, one in each session.  (Although both scores count for national record purposes only the first score counts for the championship.)  Her first score of 577 was excellent, easily enough to earn her first place, ahead of Rebecca Martin (Trent Valley), a very promising Staffordshire junior 564 and Sue Davis (Redditch) 550.  In her second round Folkard shot a superb 588, beating her own national record of 586 achieved at the World Championships in March 2007.  She is now hoping to reproduce this form next week in Spain.

(The European Indoor Championships start on 21st March near Tarragona, Spain.)

Leamington win Medals at County Field Championships

Naomi Folkard in the qualifying round
Folkard shooting in the 2009 World Games
on a wooded hillside in Chinese Taipei,
where she won the bronze medal

The County Field Championships were held at Meriden’s Forest Ground last Sunday.  Despite the somewhat uninviting cold wet weather, there was a good turnout of archers with some excellent scores for the 24 target FITA round (a variety of target faces at distances up to 60m with maximum score 432). It was an interesting, largely wooded course, although fairly flat.

The ladies’ recurve championship was won by Leamington's two-times Olympian Naomi Folkard with an excellent 352.  Naomi is primarily a target archer, but nevertheless excels at field archery and last year won silver in the World Field Championships in Hungary.  Second place went to Angela Cave.

Brian Tustin won the men’s recurve competition with an excellent 320.  beating Meriden’s Bob Lowe and Stuart Wood-Edens. Steve Partridge, who shoots barebow but is classed as recurve under GNAS rules, came fourth with a score of 267.

Three of our juniors also took part in the shoot, making a total of 13 Leamington archers, quite a good turnout for what was a very enjoyable day despite the rain showers.

Naomi wins in Las Vegas

Leamington's Naomi Folkard was among the archers entering the prestigious annual 3-day indoor archery tournament in Las Vegas.  A massive event which attracted over 1500 archers from all parts of the world, it involved a large number of competition categories covering all bow types.  Archers shot just 2½ dozen arrows each day over 18 metres, at a special  40cm ‘Vegas’ face in the form of a 3 spot triangle.

Naomi scored very consistently, amassing 289 points each day (maximum 300).  After the first day she was in second place behind Carina Christiansen (Denmark) who shot 292, the only day score during the event to top Naomi’s.  On the second day Christiansen could only make 279 giving a total of 571, and dropped down to third position behind Folkard 578 and Jennifer Nichols (USA) 573.  On the final day Folkard increased her lead finishing on 867.  Christiansen pulled back into second place with 858 and Katuna Lorig (Russia) made third, also with 858 but fewer ‘X’s.  Nichols with 857 ended up fourth.  GB’s Athens bronze medallist Alison Williamson, with 850, pulled up from 6th to 5th place.

Naomi is delighted with this result and will be working hard to further improve her indoor scores before the European Indoor Championships to be held in Spain next month.
